2009 1st Round TSSAA 5A Playoffs Hendersonville COMMANDOS (7-3) vs Clarksville Northeast Eagles (6-4) HHS will make their 11th appearance in the Tennessee High School Playoffs Friday night as they will host the Eagles from Clarksville Northeast. This will be the COMMANDOS first back to back trip to playoffs since making it 3 consecutive years from 2001-2003. The Eagles come into the game 6-4 after losing an overtime game at Clarksville Northwest in their final regular season contest. Before that loss, Northeast had won 3 straight games by shutting out their opponents. HHS goes into the playoffs at 7-3 after beating rival Gallatin last Friday 31-0 earning them the home field advantage for the 1st round. NORTHEAST HAS TOUGH DEFENSE – Clarksville Northeast features a very tough defense for 2009. They are only allowing an average of 11.8 points per game, and have had 4 shutouts this season. The Eagles have shutout 3 of their last 4 opponents, 2 of which are 6A playoff teams. DISTRICT 10 WELL REPRESENTED IN PLAYOFFS – The district that Northeast is in, District 10, features 7 playoff teams in 5A and 6A. Northeast finished 3rd place in their District. NORTHEAST BACK IN PLAYOFFS – Northeast is back in the playoffs for the first time since 2004. In 2004, they lost in the first round, finishing the season 7-4. COMMANDOS IN PLAYOFFS – This will be the COMMANDOS 11th trip to the TSSAA Play-offs. Their overall record in the Play-offs is 20-10. They are 14-4 at home, 5-4 on the road, and 1-2 at neutral sites. HHS posts a 9-1 record in 1st Round match-ups with a 6-0 record at home and 3-1 on the road. HHS’s only 1st Round departure came in 2002 at Franklin. This will also be only the second time that the COMMANDOS were able to earn 1st round home playoffs games in consecutive season. The last time that they were able to do this was 1997-1999. 100 Yard Games – Nigel Jones had 131 yards receiving and 1 TD in the 41-20 victory over Lebanon. LaDontez Bryant had 112 yards on 6 carries in the loss to LaVergne; he had also had 2 TD’s including one 76 yard scamper. Elijah Howell rushed for 157 yards in the COMMANDOS double overtime loss to Mt. Juliet. Bryant also had his second 100 yard game against the Golden Bears with 133 rushing yards. Austin Harris eclipsed the 100 yard mark rushing against Hunters Lane with 135 yards on 20 carries and 2 TD’s. Bryant and Harris go over 100 yards rushing in Portland win; Harris had 122 yards on 12 carries for his 2nd 100 yard game of 2009 while Bryant got his 3rd 100 yard game with 104 yards and 1 TD on 5 carries versus the Panthers. Harris got his 3rd 100 yard game with exactly 100 yards rushing on 13 carries in the COMMANDOS 31-0 victory over Gallatin. 10 Plus Tackle Games – Joe Townsend had his second 10 plus tackle game against Gallatin. He totaled 14 tackles including 11 solos, 1 tackle for loss, and 1 forced fumble. Austin Clem recorded 12 tackles in HHS’s loss to Beech. 10 of those were solo tackles including 1 tackle for loss. Joe Townsend was able to get 10 tackles in the COMMANDOS 40-0 win over Station Camp in Week 7. Three of his tackles were for loss totaling a loss of 10 yards, and he had 1 forced fumble. Whit Gray had 12 tackles and 1 forced fumble as well as 1 fumble recovery in HHS’s 3-0 win over Wilson Central in Week 6. Gray also had 10 tackles in the COMMANDOS victory over Lebanon in Week 2. Included in those 10 tackles was 1 sack and 1 tackle for loss; he also had a fumble recovery in the game. COMMANDOS Scoring First Career TD – VS PORTLAND-Cayman Russell picked up a fumble and ran it in for a touchdown for his first career TD. -- VS STATION CAMP-Brett Jaeckel scored his first TD on a fumble recovery. -- VS MT JULIET-Elijah Howell was able to get his first rushing TD against the Golden Bears as he had a 1 yard QB sneak into the endzone, he also had 157 yards rushing in the game. -- VS LEBANON-Hunter Brown threw his first career TD pass to Nigel Jones. Brown also recorded his first rushing TD from 1 yard out. LaDontez Bryant scored his first TD on a 3 yard run in the 1st quarter. -- VS RIVERDALE-Junior Quarterback Elijah Howell threw his first career TD pass with less than 1 minute left in HHS’s 2009 opening game. Howell’s first passing TD was to tight end Troy Dye, and it was Dye’s first career TD catch. Nigel Jones caught his first touchdown from Howell in overtime. Running Back #33 Chris Moore also scored his first career points as he plunged into the endzone in the second overtime period. BACK TO BACK SHUT-OUTS – HHS recorded back to back shutouts in their 3-0 OT win over Wilson Central and the 40-0 victory of Station Camp for the first time since 2001 when they were able to shutout Beech (27-0) and then Glencliff (23-0) the following week. SCORELESS GAMES – HHS was held scoreless through 4 quarters for the first time since losing to Gallatin 0-24 in 2005 in their Wilson Central game. The last time HHS played 4 quarters with neither team scoring was in 1972 when they tied both Madison and Stratford 0-0. COMMANDOS 3rd Overtime Game of 2009 – HHS has already played 3 overtime games in the 2009 season tying a record for the most overtime games in a season. In 1992, HHS fell to Franklin 7-10 in OT, lost to Hunters Lane 21-24 in OT, and beat Beech 35-34 in OT. This year HHS has beaten Riverdale 28-27 in 2OT, lost to Mt. Juliet 37-44 in 2OT, and beat Wilson Central 3-0 in OT. 2008 PLAYOFFS – HHS was the Region 5-5A Champions last season, and were able to knock off Ravenwood 24-17 before suffering their worst ever playoff defeat to Franklin in the 2nd round 14-48. Both games were at Memorial Stadium. HHS/Northeast Series – This is only the second meeting between the two schools, with the first coming in 1974 when Northeast blanked the COMMANDOS 0-28. It was a regular season game. HHS is losing in the series 0-1.
