Scrimmage/ Alumni Game
Saturday, May 08, 2010

The COMMANDOS managed to score on the last play of their scrimmage versus Smyrna for a 20-14 win.  After playing scoreless in the first 3 quarters, the teams traded scores in the 4th and 5th Quarters of the scrimmage.  There were some bright spots for HHS during the scrimmage, as all the players competed well, but far too many errors were committed and the COMMANDOS will need to practice hard next week to finish up a successful spring.

HHS started the scrimmage on defense, and three plays later forced the Bulldogs to punt.  Hendersonville converted on a third down pass from Elijah Howell to Nigel Jones, and then Chris Moore picked up a 1st down on a 4th down play to keep the drive alive.  However the COMMANDOS would eventually throw an interception in the endzone to give Smyrna the ball back.  HHS would give up a first down to the Bulldogs on the next possession before forcing another punt.  HHS would decide to go for a 4th down conversion unsuccessfully on their next possession giving SHS the ball back with good field position.  The Bulldogs would drive inside the 5 yardline before the Black & Gold defense would get the stop with linebacker Taylor Bozeman making a 4th down stop.  The goaline stand would be the last drive of the 1st half making the score 0-0.

HHS would get the ball to start the 2nd half, but their first drive would end with a punt.  Troy Dye would knock down a 3rd down pass to end Smyrna’s possession.  HHS would then have a sustained drive with QB Hunter Brown picking up 2 4th down conversions before David Priddy would cap the drive with a 30 yard TD run.  Smyrna would waste no time responding converting on a 4th down of their own, and then scoring on a 35 yard catch and run on the next play.  The COMMANDOS would end the 4th Quarter big as LaDontez Bryant would get a huge 20 yard gain taking the ball inside the Bulldog 5 yardline, and Moore would score from 4 yards out to give HHS a 13-7 advantage.  Smyrna would try to score again before the end of the 4th Quarter, but Taylor Bozeman would get a sack on 1st down, and the Bozeman would get help by Taylor Hooks with another sack on 3rd down, allowing the clock to run out.

The teams would play one more quarter of football.  Smyrna would waste no time ripping off a 55 yard run on the first play that set up a 3 yard QB run for a TD and with the PAT the Bulldogs took the lead 14-13.  The teams would then trade possessions.  HHS would again be held to a 3 and out giving Smyrna the ball back with the lead and only minutes left on the clock.  On their second play of the drive, HHS would force a fumble that Brandon Bourk would recover for the COMMANDOS giving HHS the ball inside the red zone.  Chad Dye would catch a pass on third down getting the ball to the 1 yard line, and Kevin Key would run it in from there as the clock ran out.  Trenton Elsten would add the extra point making the final score 20-14.

With about 30 Alumni on campus for the weekend, the Alumni game followed the scrimmage, as the black team defeated the white squad 28-21.  The attendance was great for both the scrimmage and Alumni game.  The coaching staff sincerely appreciates the support for this great day of Commando football.

The COMMANDOS will now gear up for their second scrimmage of the spring as they will take on Maplewood on Thursday at Memorial Stadium to finish spring practice.
