Maplewood rips the Commandos
Thursday, May 13, 2010

HHS ended Spring Practice on Thursday with a 6-20 loss in a scrimmage versus Maplewood at Memorial Stadium.  The COMMANDOS were competitive at times, and in spots, but got dominated for the most part by the Panthers.

The scrimmage started with each team getting to run 10 plays with no down & distance or turnovers.  Maplewood went on offense first, of their 10 plays, HHS gave up 2 big runs of 20 plus yards, but were able to keep the Panthers off the scoreboard.  The COMMANDOS had their 10 plays driving the length of the field before getting tackled on the 1 yard line on the 10th play.

The teams then went to down & distance for the remainder of the scrimmage, and Maplewood would again have the ball first.  They would take the ball the length of field with all of their yards coming from the running game before going in for a 5 yard TD run.  After the failed 2 point conversion, the COMMANDOS were down 0-6.  HHS would run 4 plays before turning the ball over on downs.  With a short field, the Black & Gold defense would come up with a fumble recovery on a 3rd and 2 situation.  HHS was able to capitalize off the turnover as 5 plays later tight end Troy Dye would catch a pass for a 40 yard TD.  The PAT would be no good, making the score tied at 6.

On the next drive, HHS would stop the Panthers on a 4th down try, but then throw 3 straight incompletions after obtaining one first down.  Maplewood would score their second TD on the ensuing drive, this one a 25 yard run around the end of the line, and they would rumble in for the 2 point conversion making the score 6-14.  HHS would start a drive and convert one 4th down before being stopped on their second conversion try.  The Panthers would waste no time extending their lead with big gains on their next 4 plays, the last being the final TD of the game.  HHS would get one more drive, but would be stopped short of the goaline after moving the ball about 50 yards.

The scrimmage marked the end of spring practice for the COMMANDOS.  The team will now focus on finishing good in the classroom as they prepare for exams on May 27 & 28.  They will hit the weight room hard starting on Thursday June 3 at 8:00 am.  Also we have our annual golf tournament coming up on June 5th.
