2010 Week 3 - Hendersonville COMMANDOS (1-1) vs LaVergne Wolverines (1-2) The COMMANDOS will have their Homecoming game this Friday night as they will take on the LaVergne Wolverines. The Wolverines handed the COMMANDOS their first loss of the season last year with a 15-26 victory at LaVergne’s homecoming game. The COMMANDOS are coming off a 47-7 win over Lebanon, while LaVergne lost to Riverdale last week 34-0; Riverdale also beat HHS in Week 1 14-22. GROOMS LEADS DISTRICT – LaVergne’s quarterback #6 L.G. Grooms has the top spot in District 7 for passing yards, completions, and attempts. He is 44-84 with 514 yards. On top of being an efficient passer, he also leads the district with 51 rushing attempts. He has 166 rushing yards with 1 TD rushing and 1 passing TD. Of his 514 passing yards 281 of them came last week in the loss to Riverdale. 2009 GAME – The Wolverines outplayed the COMMANDOS in last season’s contest with the final score being 15-26 in favor of LaVergne. HHS gave up 217 passing yards and nearly 400 total yards to the Wolverines, while the COMMANDOS had 3 turnovers in the game, and were only able to muster 1 first down in the entire 1st half. LaDontez Bryant was the only bright spot for the COMMANDOS as he had 112 rushing yards and scored both of Hendersonville’s touchdowns. HOMECOMING – HHS will have their 2010 Homecoming Friday night versus LaVergne. The COMMANDOS have enjoyed recent success in Homecoming games winning the last 4 and 5 of the last 6. DISTRICT LEADERS – On top of the quarterback Grooms leading District 7-AAA in multiple categories, the Wolverines also have the top 4 receivers in their District when it comes to receptions. #3 JT Williams leads the way with 12, #9 Mike Steele has 10, #80 Robert Hill has 9, and #4 JT Taylor has 8. Steele is #1 in receiving yards with 178, and Williams is #2 with 139 so far in 2010. 10 Plus Tackle Games – Whit Gray recorded his first 10 plus tackle of 2010 and 3rd of his career in the Week 2 game versus Lebanon. Whit ended the night with 13 tackles (10 of which were solo), 1 forced fumble, and 1 fumble recovery. Gray had 2 10 plus tackle games in 2009, they came against Lebanon and Wilson Central. Taylor Bozeman had 12 tackles in the COMMANDOS season opener versus Riverdale. OFFENSE – The COMMANDOS 47 points scored against Lebanon is the most that Hendersonville has been able to score since October 5, 2007 when they beat Glencliff 49-28. JONES #2 IN HHS RECORD BOOKS – Senior Nigel Jones grabbed the #2 spot in COMMANDO football history with his 93 yard kickoff return to start the second half versus Lebanon. Nigel’s kick return was the first for a touchdown since Nick Yazzie had a 62 yard return versus Glencliff in 2008; Ryan Alexander’s 96 yarder in 1998 is the only one longer than Nigel’s. Nigel is also #2 with a 90 yard pass reception that he had against Lebanon in 2009. COMMANDOS Scoring First Career TD –VS LEBANON-Jarrell Adams scored his first career TD on a 49 yard run late in the first half, he was also the team’s leading rusher with 66 yards. HHS/LaVergne series – HHS has the series lead 6-1. The COMMANDOS first loss to LaVergne came last season at ‘The Den’ when the Wolverines won their homecoming game 15-26. The teams played from 1989-1992, and then again when they were put in the same Region in 1997 and 1998.
